Published in the journal Scientific Reports, one study highlights the recently discovered link between oral bacteria and hemorrhagic strokes. This type of stroke occurs when blood vessels in the brain rupture, causing bleeding.

Inflammation of the gums, also known as gingivitis, is a common condition characterized by swollen, often tender, and easily bleeding gums. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more severe form of gum disease, known as periodontal disease.

Severe periodontal disease can result in tooth decay, bone loss, and even tooth loss. Some studies have even reported a potential link between tooth loss and greater risk for having strokes.

The Connection to Oral Health

Keeping up with a good oral hygiene routine is crucial, as it will not only help save your oral health, but also your overall health. If you notice that your gums bleed when you floss and/or brush, this is often a tale-tell sign of gingivitis.

To help fight this, be sure to brush at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Flossing at least once a day is also necessary to keep bacteria at bay. Practicing good oral health habits can help reduce your risk of developing other systemic health issues, including strokes.
